This is Peter. Peter's been a milkman for eighteen years. He works six days a week, starting his round at 1am and finishing eleven hours later. Declining customer numbers means that Peter's seven hundred customers are spread over a wider area than they used to be. Now he has to cover fifty miles every day so the electric float has been replaced by a diesel van. But the glass bottles that he delivers the milk in are still re-used twenty-five times.
Peter says that the job's what you make it. He doesn't consider himself solely a milkman. He sees himself as a security guard, neighbourhood watch and a carer. You either love or hate this job, says Peter, and he loves it, even at 3am on a wet, winter morning.
